Activated sludge is the biological workhorse behind most municipal and industrial wastewater plants: a community of microorganisms (the "biomass" or MLSS) is kept suspended and aerated in a reactor tank, where it metabolises dissolved organic pollutants faster than they could ever settle out on their own, before the mixture flows into a quiet secondary clarifier that separates clear treated water from the settling sludge. This simulator renders that two-tank process in 3D — amber pollutant particles drift into the aeration zone and get consumed by brown biomass flocs at a rate set by dissolved oxygen and biomass concentration, while settled sludge either recycles back to sustain the reactor (RAS) or is wasted. Four real process controls — influent flow, MLSS, aeration intensity and recycle ratio — drive the same continuously-stirred-reactor mass-balance equation used to design real plants, with effluent BOD, removal efficiency, F/M ratio and hydraulic retention time updating live as you tune them.
