Fish Ladder Hydraulics Simulator

Interactive pool-and-weir fish-ladder simulator: tune the head drop, slot width and pool size on a hydropower dam bypass, watch the weir-equation jet velocity and turbulent energy dissipation update live, and see whether a migrating fish can actually swim upstream through it.

Every dam that blocks a river also blocks the fish that migrate along it, so hydropower schemes are built with a staircase of pools — a fish ladder — that lets the river drop its head gradually enough for fish to swim back up. This simulator models one real pool-and-weir bypass in 3D: adjust the head drop per pool, the slot width and the pool width and watch the weir-equation jet velocity, discharge and turbulent energy dissipation update live, exactly as a fisheries engineer would size the structure. Release a fish and watch it attempt each slot for real — if the jet is faster than the chosen species' burst swim speed, the fish gets swept straight back down, showing why an oversized head drop turns a ladder into a wall.
