Seed Bank Pulse: Disturbance & Germination Simulator

Interactive 3D model of a soil seed bank: dormant seeds lose viability over time and germinate in a pulse only when a disturbance opens a canopy gap and floods the ground with light.

A grid-based model of the mechanism that lets forests and grasslands recover after fire, logging or storm damage: a soil seed bank of dormant, slowly-decaying seeds that stays invisible under an intact canopy and germinates in a sudden pulse the moment a disturbance opens a light gap. Trigger disturbances of different radius and severity, watch the canopy pillars collapse and the pale seed-bank dots drain as seedlings establish, and read live averages of seed density, canopy cover and germination flux across the plot as the seed-rain loop slowly refills the bank for the next cycle.

⚙ Under the hood

A grid-based model of how forest and grassland ecosystems bounce back after disturbance: dormant seeds accumulate in the soil seed bank, decay in viability over time, and germinate in a pulse only when a canopy gap opens the light they need.
