Hedgerow Bloom Succession & Fruit Set

Interactive hedgerow simulator: watch berry bushes and shrubs bloom in succession through the season, bees forage across whichever species is flowering, and fruit set builds up from accumulated flower visits. Compare a mixed hedgerow against a single-species planting.

A good pollinator hedgerow isn't one great shrub — it's a relay of many. This simulator lines up nine real UK berry bushes and hedgerow shrubs, each blooming in its own season-accurate window, and lets a foraging bee population work whichever species is currently open. Every visit a bee lands nudges that shrub's fruit set upward, following a saturating pollination-yield curve, while any stretch with nothing in flower counts against the hedge as a forage gap. Switch off the mixed planting to see what happens with a single-species (bramble-only) hedge instead: one strong pulse of fruit set, and long silent gaps the rest of the year — the same trade-off beekeepers and gardeners weigh when choosing what to plant.

Watch nine real UK berry bushes and hedgerow shrubs bloom in succession through the season while foraging bees work whichever species is open, and fruit set builds up from accumulated flower visits following a saturating pollination curve. Toggle a mixed hedgerow against a single-species (bramble-only) planting to see the forage-gap trade-off.
