How it works

Nine hedgerow species each bloom in their own real UK window — blackthorn in March, hawthorn and blueberry in spring, raspberry and dog rose into early summer, bramble and buddleia through high summer, ivy into autumn. Every frame, foraging bees pick a currently-blooming shrub, fly to a flower, and register a visit. A shrub's fruit set builds up from its own accumulated visits while it is in bloom, then freezes once its flowers close:

Mixed hedgerow — toggles between the real nine-species layering (continuous bloom March→November) and a monoculture of bramble alone (one long pulse, everything else silent).
Bee density — how many foragers are working the hedge; more bees means more visits landing on whatever is open, and a faster climb toward saturating fruit set.
Season speed — how fast the calendar advances; the season loops continuously so you can compare outcomes run after run.
Forage-gap days — cumulative days so far with zero species in flower. A single-species hedge leaves this high; the layered mix keeps it near zero, matching why beekeepers plant hedgerows for continuous bloom rather than one "best" shrub.

Real-world relevance: bell-flowered species like blueberry rely heavily on bee visitation for fruit set, and a hedge with staggered bloom times keeps pollinators fed — and fruit set high across every species — from early spring right through to autumn ivy.
