Land Sparing vs Land Sharing Simulator (2D)
2D top-down grid model of the land sparing vs land sharing debate: two 10x10 regions must each hit the same fixed food-production target, and a live biodiversity score reveals which spatial strategy actually wins as you retune farm intensity and the region's species mix.
This 2D companion drives the same land-use arithmetic as the 3D version through a plain top-down grid: two 10x10 regions sit side by side, each must independently hit the same fixed food-production target, and moving the farm-intensity sliders changes how much land each strategy needs to get there — the leftover becomes reserve. Dots wandering the grids stand in for generalist and habitat-specialist wildlife; specialists visibly avoid farmed tiles while generalists cross freely, and the biodiversity comparison panel updates live as you retune the species mix.
Two fixed-target land-use grids compared side by side: farm intensity sets yield-per-hectare and thus land needed, species mix weights how habitat specialists (reserve-only) and generalists (reserve plus partial farmland credit) score each layout.

Land sparing farms a small area intensively and sets aside the rest of the region as an untouched reserve. Land sharing farms a larger area at lower intensity, weaving wildlife-friendly elements into the farmland itself, which leaves a smaller separate reserve — both must hit the same fixed food-production target.
Habitat specialists only score points from genuinely untouched reserve land, so they reward land sparing's large contiguous block. Generalists score from reserve land and partly from wildlife-friendly farmland too, so they reward land sharing's larger total wildlife-friendly footprint.
