MPA Patrol & Poaching Interdiction Simulator (2D)
Interactive top-down 2D simulator of Marine Protected Area enforcement: drag and zoom over a patrolled no-take zone where patrol vessels sweep for poachers detected by a Poisson process driven by fleet density and AIS/satellite coverage, while fish biomass grows logistically and spills over the reserve boundary.
Marine Protected Areas only work if their no-take rules actually hold, and holding them is a detection problem as much as a biology problem. This top-down 2D simulator renders a Marine Protected Area as a patrolled no-take disc while poacher boats attempt incursions from outside the boundary. Detection is modeled as a real Poisson process driven by patrol density and AIS/satellite sensor coverage — raise either one and undetected poachers get rarer, exactly as it works for actual fisheries enforcement. Fish biomass inside the reserve grows logistically and is drained only by catch that slips past patrols, while a diffusion term carries surplus biomass across the boundary into the adjacent fished zone, reproducing the "spillover" benefit that is the strongest empirical argument for no-take MPAs. Switch between perimeter-sweep and random-patrol strategies, dial in poaching pressure, drag and zoom the chart, and watch interception rate, in-reserve and spillover biomass, and cumulative illegal catch respond live.
