Zeolite Ion Exchange Water Softening (2D)
2D ion-exchange column model: a moving exhaustion front trades Na+ on the zeolite resin for hard water's Ca2+/Mg2+, a live breakthrough curve tracks effluent hardness as capacity runs out, and a brine wash regenerates the bed.
Zeolite ion-exchange softening removes hardness — dissolved Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ — from water by trading it for Na⁺ held on a sodium-form resin bed, a reaction that runs to completion as long as exchange sites remain available. This 2D companion drives the same chemistry as the 3D version through a plain column-and-chart view built for reading the process rather than watching a rendered tank: sliders set the influent hardness, flow rate and the resin's exchange capacity, a shaded exhaustion front descends through the column as capacity is consumed, and a logistic breakthrough curve plots effluent hardness against cumulative bed volumes treated so the moment leakage starts to climb is directly visible. A one-click NaCl brine regeneration reverses the exchange by mass action and resets the bed, letting you compare how flow rate and resin quality change the length of a softening cycle.
Mass-balance ion-exchange model of a Na-zeolite softener column: a moving exhaustion front consumes resin capacity as hard water passes through, a logistic breakthrough curve tracks effluent hardness against bed volumes treated, and a brine-regeneration step resets the bed to its sodium form.
