Bomb Calorimeter 2D: Food Caloric Value Analysis

Interactive 2D bomb calorimeter with a live temperature strip-chart: burn a carbohydrate, protein, or fat sample in an oxygen bomb submerged in water, drag/zoom the pannable scene, and watch the caloric value in kcal/g compute live from the same heat-balance equation real nutrient analysis labs use.

Nutrient analysis labs measure how many calories a food actually contains by burning a weighed sample completely inside a sealed oxygen "bomb" submerged in water, then reading how far the temperature of that water rises. This 2D simulator renders a pannable, zoomable cross-section of a real bomb calorimeter — pick a carbohydrate, protein, or fat sample, set its mass and the water bath mass, and ignite it to watch sparks flash, the bath warm and its convection bubbles quicken, and a live strip-chart trace the temperature climbing to its plateau below the scene. The measured caloric value in kcal/g is computed live from the same q = (m·c + C_bomb)·ΔT relationship used in real ASTM/ISO calorimetry, and compared against reference bomb-calorimetry values for each macronutrient.
