The Physics of Wind Energy

Wind energy fundamentally relies on Bernoulli’s principle – as air flows faster, its pressure decreases. A wind turbine utilizes this difference in pressure to rotate its blades.

The blades are designed with an airfoil shape, similar to an aircraft wing. As the wind strikes the blade, a force called lift is generated, causing it to turn. The greater the angle of attack (the angle between the blade and the wind), the more lift produced.

Wind Turbine Types

There are primarily two types of wind turbines: horizontal-axis and vertical-axis. Horizontal-axis turbines, like the vast majority used today, have blades that rotate around a horizontal axis – mimicking a traditional windmill.

Vertical-axis turbines, conversely, have their rotor shaft oriented vertically. These can be advantageous in turbulent winds or where space is limited.

Energy Conversion

Once the blades rotate, they turn a generator – typically a doubly-fed induction generator. This generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy through electromagnetic induction.

The rotating shaft of the turbine is directly coupled to the rotor of the generator, efficiently transferring kinetic energy and producing electricity.

Environmental Considerations

Wind energy produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation. However, manufacturing turbines and constructing wind farms do have an environmental footprint.
