The Physics of Wind Energy
Wind energy fundamentally relies on Bernoulli’s principle – as air flows faster, its pressure decreases. A wind turbine utilizes this difference in pressure to rotate its blades.
The blades are designed with an airfoil shape, similar to an aircraft wing. As the wind strikes the blade, a force called lift is generated, causing it to turn. The greater the angle of attack (the angle between the blade and the wind), the more lift produced.
Lift = 1/2 * ρ * v² * A * cos(θ)
Types of Wind Turbines
There are primarily two types of wind turbines: horizontal-axis and vertical-axis. Horizontal-axis turbines, like the vast majority used today, have blades that rotate around a horizontal axis – mimicking a traditional windmill.
Vertical-axis turbines, conversely, have their rotor shaft oriented vertically. These can be advantageous in turbulent winds or where space is limited.
Energy Conversion
Once the blades rotate, they turn a generator – typically a doubly-fed induction generator. This generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy through electromagnetic induction.
The rotating shaft of the turbine is directly coupled to the rotor of the generator, efficiently transferring kinetic energy and producing electricity.
V = ω * R
Key Terms - Energy Storage
Energy storage technologies are critical for integrating variable renewable energy sources such as solar and wind into the electricity grid. These systems store excess energy generated during periods of high production and release it when demand exceeds supply.
Various types of energy storage exist, including batteries (lithium-ion, lead-acid), pumped hydro, compressed air energy storage (CAES), and thermal energy storage. Each technology has its own advantages and disadvantages regarding cost, efficiency, and scalability.
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are currently the most widely deployed form of energy storage due to their relatively low cost and high power density. However, other technologies such as pumped hydro continue to play a significant role in large-scale energy storage applications.
