Mendelian Genetics
The core of classical genetics revolves around Mendel’s Laws. These laws describe how traits are inherited in simple patterns. The Law of Segregation states that each individual has two alleles for a trait, and these alleles separate during gamete formation.
The Law of Independent Assortment dictates that allele pairs for different genes assort independently during gamete formation – meaning the inheritance of one gene doesn’t influence the inheritance of another (assuming they are on different chromosomes).

Punnett Squares
Punnett squares are diagrams used to predict the genotypes and phenotypes of offspring from a cross. They visually represent all possible combinations of alleles.
By constructing a Punnett square based on the parental genotypes, we can determine the probability of different traits appearing in the next generation.

Beyond Mendel’s Laws
Many genetic traits don't follow simple Mendelian patterns. Complex inheritance includes multiple alleles, incomplete dominance, and co-dominance.
