Levels of Ecological Organization

Food Webs and Energy Flow

Nearly all ecosystems are based on feeding relationships. Producers (plants) convert sunlight into energy through photosynthesis. Consumers (animals) obtain this energy by eating other organisms.

These interactions form complex food webs, illustrating the flow of energy and nutrients. The efficiency of energy transfer decreases at each trophic level – typically only 10% moves from one level to the next.

Population Dynamics

Logistic growth models incorporate carrying capacity – the maximum population size an environment can sustain. This model predicts that populations will eventually level off due to resource limitations.
