Why clover is the workhorse of bee forage

Clover (Trifolium species) is one of the most efficient bee plants you can grow because it asks for almost nothing in return. As a legume, it fixes atmospheric nitrogen into the soil via bacteria in its root nodules, so it actually improves soil fertility rather than depleting it — useful if it's mixed into a lawn or a fallow patch. It tolerates mowing, poor soil, drought and heavy foot traffic far better than most flowering plants, and it flowers prolifically over a long season for very little input.

White clover (Trifolium repens) is the low, creeping clover found in most UK lawns already, often unnoticed until it's allowed to flower. Its small white-pink flower heads are a major nectar source for honeybees and short-tongued bumblebees through summer, and it copes with regular mowing by simply flowering low to the ground between cuts, which is exactly why it thrives in lawns that get mown often.

Red clover (Trifolium pratense) is taller, with larger pink-purple flower heads, and is the clover most associated with traditional hay meadows and pasture. Its flower tubes are longer than white clover's, so it's used mainly by longer-tongued bumblebees (such as garden bumblebee and common carder bee) and less by honeybees, which often can't reach the nectar unless they 'rob' the flower from the side.

Crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum) is a striking annual with tall, deep-red conical flower spikes, widely used as a farm cover crop and green manure because it grows fast, suppresses weeds and fixes nitrogen over a single season. It's an excellent quick-fix bee plant for a new bed or allotment: sow in spring or early autumn, get a mass of colour and bee activity within weeks, then dig it in before it sets seed to feed the soil for whatever you plant next.

Wildflowers and meadow mixes

A proper UK wildflower meadow is not simply 'not mowing' a patch of lawn — grass left unmown tends to grow lush and thick and shade out the wildflowers you actually want. Traditional hay meadows work because they're on relatively poor, low-fertility soil, cut once in mid-to-late summer after flowering and seed-set, with the cuttings removed (not left to rot down and fertilise the ground further). Recreating that at garden scale usually means either stripping topsoil to reduce fertility before sowing, or using yellow rattle (Rhinanthus minor), a semi-parasitic annual that weakens grasses and gives wildflowers room to compete.

Commercial wildflower mixes and meadow mixes vary hugely in quality. Cheap “meadow in a can” mixes are often dominated by a handful of fast, showy annuals (poppy, cornflower, corn marigold) that put on a good first-year show but fade fast, because true perennial meadow species establish slowly from seed and need a year or two before they flower well. A good UK mix will specify a grass:wildflower seed ratio (commonly around 80:20 by weight, sometimes wildflower-only for annual mixes) and list species suited to your soil type — chalk/limestone mixes differ substantially from acid or clay mixes.

Native versus introduced species

Native UK wildflowers (ox-eye daisy, knapweed, bird's-foot trefoil, field scabious, yellow rattle and the rest of the traditional meadow palette) have co-evolved with native bee species over a very long time, and many specialist solitary bees are tied to particular native plant genera for pollen. Introduced or non-native ornamental plants can still be valuable — many garden favourites from the Mediterranean and elsewhere (lavender, borage, catmint) are superb bee plants precisely because bees are generalist foragers responding to nectar and pollen availability, not plant nationality. The main risk with non-natives is not that bees can't use them, but that a small number of vigorous introduced species (Himalayan balsam is the classic UK example) can escape into wild habitats and outcompete the native flora that specialist pollinators depend on. For garden planting this is rarely an issue; for anything sown near watercourses or wild land, it's worth checking a species isn't listed as invasive in the UK before planting it in bulk.

Practical tips for a clover or wildflower patch

  • Oversow an existing lawn with white clover seed in spring or early autumn rather than digging up the whole lawn — it will fill in gaps within a season.
  • Sow crimson clover as a quick green manure on bare allotment or veg-bed soil between crops; it's usually killed by hard frost, which makes it easy to dig in.
  • For a meadow patch from scratch, cut and remove existing vegetation, rake to bare soil, and sow in early autumn (September) for best establishment, watering only if the ground is very dry.
  • Cut a wildflower meadow once, after seed has dropped (typically August–September in the UK), and always remove the cuttings rather than leaving them to enrich the soil.
