Beeswax: Harvesting, Rendering and Working the Comb

Why beeswax is worth collecting
Beeswax is secreted from four pairs of wax glands on the underside of a worker bee's abdomen, produced as tiny translucent scales that the bee chews and works into comb. It takes a great deal of nectar to make wax, oft-cited figures suggest roughly six to eight kilograms of honey consumed for every kilogram of wax produced, which is one reason beekeepers save every scrap rather than melting comb down casually or discarding cappings with the extraction waste.
Beyond its role as the bees' own building material, wax is the beekeeper's most versatile hive product. It can be rendered into foundation, sold as blocks to candle makers and cosmetic producers, used to waterproof wood, or kept simply for its remarkable ability to store scent and warmth in a way few other natural waxes match. In the UK, a small but steady artisan market exists for local beeswax candles, furniture polish, and lip balms, and many hobbyist beekeepers find wax sales a pleasant secondary income alongside honey.
Sources of wax in the apiary
The cleanest and most valuable wax comes from cappings, the thin layer of new wax bees use to seal ripe honey cells before extraction. Cappings wax is pale, has never held brood, and needs minimal cleaning. Old brood comb, by contrast, darkens with each successive brood cycle as cocoon silk, propolis and residues from developing larvae accumulate; this comb yields a browner, denser wax and is generally not reused as foundation because of the risk of carrying over disease spores or pesticide residues that concentrate in old wax over time.
Good apiary practice is to rotate brood comb out of the hive on a cycle, commonly every three to five years, replacing it with fresh foundation or drawn comb. This keeps cell sizes correct, reduces the reservoir of pathogens such as American foulbrood spores that can persist in old wax for decades, and provides a regular supply of darker wax suited to industrial uses like wood polish rather than cosmetics.
Extracting cappings wax
Cappings are usually removed with an uncapping knife or a cappings scratcher (a wide, multi-toothed hand tool) before frames go into the extractor. The cappings themselves still contain a good amount of honey clinging to the wax, so most beekeepers let them drain in a cappings tank or straining tray for a day or two, recovering that residual honey before the wax is washed and rendered. Rinsing cappings in cool water removes most of the remaining honey, which is important because sugar residues encourage mould and darken the finished wax.
Once drained and rinsed, cappings wax renders very cleanly with gentle, indirect heat. Beeswax has a relatively low melting point around 62 to 64 degrees Celsius, and overheating it, especially in direct contact with a naked flame or a scorching pan, discolours the wax and can even make it flammable, so a double-boiler or bain-marie approach is standard practice.
Solar wax melters and steam rendering
The solar wax melter is a favourite among UK hobbyists precisely because it needs no fuel and produces excellent quality wax with minimal labour. It is essentially an insulated box with a glazed, angled lid that concentrates sunlight onto a metal tray holding cappings or comb scraps; melted wax runs down into a collecting container below while grosser debris is caught on a mesh or cloth filter. On a bright but not necessarily hot UK summer day, a solar melter can comfortably reach the wax's melting point, and because the wax never touches an open flame, the risk of scorching is very low.
For darker, dirtier brood comb, steam rendering or boiling in water tends to work better than solar melting, since steam or hot water can drive more efficiently through the tougher cocoon material. Comb is placed in a mesh bag inside a steam wax extractor or simmered gently in a pot of water, and the liquid wax is skimmed or allowed to rise and set as a cake on top of the water once cooled, with the debris and darker sediment left below.
Filtering, moulding and storage
Rendered wax generally needs a second, finer filtering pass to remove pollen grains, propolis flecks and fine debris that survive the first melt. Pouring warm liquid wax through several layers of muslin, an old T-shirt, or purpose-made wax filter paper, into a warmed container, produces the smooth, glass-clear blocks associated with high quality beeswax. Doing this filtering slowly, and keeping the wax warm throughout, prevents it setting prematurely in the cloth and clogging the filter.
Once poured into moulds, ranging from simple loaf tins to silicone candle moulds, wax should be allowed to cool slowly to avoid cracking, and stored away from direct sunlight, which bleaches and can eventually degrade the surface. Properly stored, clean beeswax has an almost indefinite shelf life; it does not spoil in the way honey can ferment, though it can pick up odours from strong-smelling storage if left unwrapped for long periods.
