🌳 Climate-Smart Shade and Windbreak Design for UK Apiaries
Interactively model how windbreak height and shade structures cut wind exposure and heat stress on a row of hives across the seasons.
A 3D apiary scene showing how a permeable windbreak hedge slows and redirects wind flowing toward a row of hives, and how a shade canopy blocks direct sun as it tracks across the sky through the day.
🔬 What It Demonstrates
Windbreak height and downwind distance jointly determine wind reduction, visualised live as flow ribbons that slow and swirl behind the hedge. A raycast from each hive to the sun determines real shading from the canopy, which combines with wind cooling to drive an estimated hive surface temperature.
🎮 How to Use
Adjust wind speed and windbreak height to see protection change with distance downwind. Move the time-of-day slider to sweep the sun and its shadow across the hives, switch season for a summer heatwave or winter storm baseline, and toggle the shade canopy on or off.
💡 Did You Know?
A permeable hedge (about 40–60% density) protects a longer stretch of ground more evenly than a solid fence, because solid barriers create turbulent eddies just beyond them instead of a smooth calming wake.
