Harrier Marsh Quartering Lab (2D)

2D top-down quartering-flight lab: a harrier sweeps the marsh in boustrophedon transects while a half-normal detection function — the same shape used in real wildlife line-transect surveys — decides when hidden voles are spotted, then dives to intercept.

This 2D companion strips the 3D scene down to the mechanic that actually drives a harrier's hunt: a systematic back-and-forth ("boustrophedon") quartering flight over the reedbed, paired with a half-normal detection function — the same detection-probability shape field biologists use in line-transect wildlife surveys — that decides when a hidden vole is close enough, and the flight slow enough, to be spotted. Search altitude trades a wider sweep for a weaker detection signal, wind adds a real energetic cost on the upwind legs, and a live scoreboard tracks distance flown, marsh coverage, catches and energy reserve.
