Octopus Camouflage Matcher (2D)
Interactive 2D top-down octopus: chromatophore skin samples the seabed patch underneath it and blends its color and mottling pattern to match, with an adjustable match speed and an occasional imperfect match.
This 2D top-down simulator models the real chromatophore camouflage mechanic in octopuses: a sampling window under the animal's mantle continuously reads the color and texture of the seabed tile beneath it, and the visible skin color eases toward that sample at a rate set by a match-speed slider, with a tunable misfire chance that occasionally locks in an imperfect shade the way real skin does when the substrate changes faster than the neural drive can track. Drag the octopus across sand, reef and rubble tiles or let it auto-drift, add a mottled secondary pattern with the mottle-detail slider, and watch the live match-quality score and detection-risk readout respond in real time.
Drag a top-down octopus across sand, reef and rubble seabed tiles and watch its chromatophore skin sample the patch directly underneath and blend its color and mottled pattern to match, with an adjustable match speed and an occasional imperfect-match misfire.
