Stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) is the leading proposal for solar radiation management: spraying reflective sulfate aerosols high in the stratosphere to mimic the cooling seen after major volcanic eruptions like Pinatubo. This simulation models the mass balance of injected aerosol against its natural settling, the resulting optical depth and radiative forcing, and the slow thermal response of a simplified global climate. Adjust the injection rate, latitude and particle lifetime to see how a geoengineering program would have to be sustained indefinitely to hold a cooling effect steady.
