🦵 3D Post-Thrombotic Syndrome Risk Simulator

A deep vein rendered in genuine 3D — a bumpy thrombus, three hinged bicuspid valves and reflux/antegrade flow particles wrapped in a compression helix, all driven by the same DVT-location and time-since-DVT Villalta/risk model as the 2D Post-Thrombotic Syndrome simulation.

How the 3D post-thrombotic syndrome model works

A vertical deep vein sits in genuine orbit-able 3D space — a translucent tube carrying a bumpy thrombus, three hinged bicuspid valve pairs and a stream of flow particles, wrapped by a limb shell and, in the prevention stage, a compression helix — all driven by the exact same equations as the 2D Post-Thrombotic Syndrome simulation.

The control panel exposes three verified parameters — DVT Location/Extent, Time Since DVT, and Stage navigation — each wired directly into the same locationInfo(), Villalta and PTS-risk formulas as the 2D canvas version. The live readout panel reports Villalta score, PTS risk percentage, DVT location label and prevention adherence for the current stage.

⚙ Under the hood

DVT Location/Extent (0–100) maps to the same three location bands as the 2D original — Distal (factor 0.18), Proximal (0.35) and Iliofemoral (0.50) — via locationInfo(locV). Time Since DVT (0–24 months) drives timeSat = 1 − exp(−t/7), and both feed the identical formulas villalta = clamp(factor·60·timeSat, 0, 33), riskPct = clamp(factor·100·(0.4+0.6·timeSat), 3, 65) and adherence = clamp(85 − t·1.5, 18, 90). Stage 5 (Prevention) applies the same mitigation the 2D version applies — adherence += 18, then villalta *= (1 − 0.35·mitigation) and riskPct *= (1 − 0.40·mitigation) where mitigation = adherence/100.

Those numbers drive real 3D geometry rather than a flat canvas: each valve's residual gap and orange-to-blue leaflet tint track the location-derived damage factor; a hinge animation opens and closes the leaflets on a calf-muscle-pump cycle, with damaged valves failing to fully coapt exactly as they do physiologically. A bumpy icosahedron thrombus shrinks with timeSat (recanalization); an instanced particle stream flows antegrade (blue) up the tube and switches a damage-proportional fraction to retrograde reflux (purple) from the chronic-hypertension stage onward; the outer limb shell swells with PTS risk and tints toward brown with the Villalta score (edema and pigmentation); and a green compression helix fades in during the prevention stage at an opacity tied to adherence.
