🫁 3D Lung SBRT Ablation: Motion, Beams & BED in Real Space

Watch a moving lung tumor tracked through a real 3D chest cavity, converge a non-coplanar beam array on it, and fire hypofractionated ablative doses — the same motion, BED and lung-sparing model as the 2D version, now walked around in genuine 3D space with orbit controls.

How the 3D lung SBRT ablation model works

Watch a moving lung tumor tracked through a real 3D chest cavity, converge a non-coplanar beam array on it, and fire hypofractionated ablative doses — the same motion, BED and lung-sparing model as the 2D version, now walked around in genuine 3D space with orbit controls.

The control panel exposes three verified parameters — motion management strategy, dose per fraction and non-coplanar beam count — each wired directly into the same excursion, Biologically Effective Dose and gradient-index formulas as the 2D canvas version. The live readout panel reports motion excursion, fractions delivered, cumulative BED, lung V20 and gradient index, all recomputed every frame from the same dosimetry state the chest cavity renders.

⚙ Under the hood

Every frame derives the fraction count n = clamp(round(48 / d), 3, 10) from the chosen dose per fraction d, then the cumulative Biologically Effective Dose BED = n·d·(1 + d/10) — identical to the 2D original's linear-quadratic formula. Motion excursion (18 / 9 / 3 mm) and lung V20 (11.4% / 7.6% / 4.5%) are read straight off the selected motion-management strategy, exactly as in the 2D version. In 3D, the tumor sphere physically oscillates inside the right lung mesh along the same excursion amplitude as the diaphragm plane rises and falls with the breathing cycle, a wireframe Internal Target Volume ellipsoid resizes to the live excursion, and a golden-angle-distributed array of beam lines — its count set by the beam-count slider, which also derives a gradient index — converges on the tumor's live 3D position and flashes in sync with the same fire/pause fractionation cadence as the 2D canvas, driving an additive-blended dose-cloud sprite and point light at the target. The whole chest cavity slowly auto-rotates and can be freely orbited and zoomed.
