Spacecraft Trace Contaminant Control System
Interactive 2D simulator of a spacecraft cabin's trace contaminant control loop: tune crew size, airflow and catalytic-oxidizer temperature, watch the charcoal bed saturate on a real Langmuir isotherm and the cabin VOC level track a live strip chart against a SMAC-style compliance limit.
Every crewed cabin off-gasses trace volatile organics from plastics, adhesives, coatings and crew metabolism, and this simulator models the two-stage air treatment loop that keeps them below safety limits: a charcoal adsorption bed that loads and eventually saturates, and a high-temperature catalytic oxidizer that burns the lighter gases the charcoal can't hold. Tune crew size, airflow rate and oxidizer temperature and watch a live 2D recirculation loop, a Langmuir-style bed-loading model and Arrhenius oxidation kinetics drive the cabin's trace-contaminant concentration up or down against a SMAC-style compliance limit, plotted on a running strip chart — then press regenerate to desorb the bed to vacuum, exactly as real ECLSS charcoal canisters are cycled.
Adjust crew size, airflow rate, and oxidizer temp to manage cabin VOC levels and charcoal bed saturation.
