🧬 Human Migration & Cultural Diversity — Serial Founder Effect (2D)

2D top-down anthropology simulation of the peopling of the world: population bands migrate outward from a single origin, split when they outgrow their territory, and lose genetic and cultural diversity with every founding event.

This 2D companion runs the same serial-founder-effect model as the 3D globe version on a flat migration map: population bands drift outward from a single origin, split into new settlements once they outgrow the shared carrying capacity, and each founding event carries only a shrinking fraction of the parent's genetic and cultural diversity — H(n) = H0·(1−k)ⁿ. Colour tracks diversity from bright teal near the origin to grey at the migration front, and faint dots mark past founding sites.

What is the serial founder effect?

It's the repeated loss of genetic and cultural diversity that happens each time a small group splits off from a larger population to found a new settlement — because the founders only carry a subset of the parent group's variation. Repeated over many founding events along a migration route, diversity keeps shrinking the further a lineage travels from its origin.

How does this 2D version differ from the 3D globe version?

Both run the identical population-growth, splitting, and diversity-decay formulas. The 3D version places bands on a rotating globe; this 2D version plots the same bands on a flat, top-down migration map so the mechanic reads clearly without needing to orbit a camera.

Why do the dots change colour?

Colour encodes each band's current diversity value H, from bright teal (H≈1, close to the origin's founding diversity) to grey (H→0, many founder events removed from the origin) — visualising the founder effect directly on the map.
