🌀 Polaron Formation 2D: Electron-Phonon Dressing
A 2D Canvas companion to the 3D polaron lab: watch a lattice of ions polarize around a moving electron, and see how coupling strength drives the crossover from light large-polaron to heavy self-trapped small-polaron. ⇄ 3D version
This is the 2D Canvas companion to the 3D Polaron Formation lab. It renders the same Froehlich-model physics — a moving electron dragging a polarization cloud through a lattice of ions — as a flat top-down view instead of a WebGL scene.
🔬 What It Demonstrates
How a charge carrier polarizes a surrounding ion lattice, with the depth and reach of the polarization cloud growing as coupling strength increases.
🎮 How to Use
Pick a material preset, drag the coupling slider, and watch effective mass and polaron radius update live as the lattice responds.
💡 Did You Know?
In strongly-coupled polaronic oxides the effective mass can rise more than tenfold, effectively pinning the electron in place.
Same real physics as the 3D lab: effective mass m*/m0 = 1/(1 − α/6 − α²/240), polaron radius r0/(1 + α/3), rendered with Canvas2D instead of Three.js.
