Schwinger Effect (2D): Vacuum Pair Production in a Strong Field

A 2D cross-section of the Schwinger effect: crank up the electric field between a pair of plates and watch the quantum vacuum tunnel virtual electron-positron pairs into real, escaping particles as the field approaches the critical Schwinger limit.

Quantum field theory says the vacuum is a boiling sea of virtual particle-antiparticle pairs that appear and vanish within the limits of the uncertainty principle. This 2D cross-section makes that visible: a uniform electric field is applied between two plates, and each frame the vacuum "attempts" to tunnel an electron-positron pair into reality. Below the critical Schwinger field the attempt almost always fails and the pair collapses back to nothing; as the field strength approaches and exceeds Ecrit, the WKB tunneling probability rises exponentially and pairs increasingly escape as real, separating particles — exactly the non-perturbative QED mechanism thought to operate near ultra-intense lasers and in the near-horizon field of black holes via Hawking radiation.
