Mineral Hardness Scratch Test (2D)

A flat 2D scratch-test lab running the same real depth/resistance formula as the 3D version: pick sample and indenter hardness on the Mohs scale, set the load, and run a pass to see whether a groove actually cuts in.

This 2D companion runs the same real Mohs scratch-test formula as the 3D lab: scratch depth grows with the hardness gap between indenter and sample times the applied force, while a softer indenter just burnishes the surface instead of cutting a groove. Drawn as a flat side-on view, the groove itself is easier to read than in the orbiting 3D scene.

⚙ Under the hood

2D scratch-test simulation of the Mohs hardness scale: a real depth formula (hardness gap × force) and a resistance formula (load × sample hardness factor) decide whether the indenter leaves a true scratch or only an abrasion mark.
