Ames Room Illusion Explained (2D)

Interactive 2D Ames-room simulator: see the true trapezoidal floor plan from above and the deceptively rectangular view through the peephole, with live apparent-size and true-vs-assumed-distance readouts.

This 2D companion breaks the Ames-room "giant and dwarf" illusion into the two views that make it work: panel A is the true floor plan seen from above, showing the room is actually a trapezoid whose far corners sit at very different real distances from one fixed eye point; panel B is a straight perspective projection of that same room from the eye, which looks like an ordinary rectangular room because every distorted corner was built along a sight ray from that exact point. Drag the trapezoid-amount slider to see how strong the distortion can get while panel B still reads as normal, then drag the viewing-position slider away from the peephole to watch the illusion collapse as the true shape leaks into view — while the live readouts show the two identical 1.80 m figures' real distances pulling apart even though the room implies they are equidistant.

⚙ Under the hood

This 2D companion splits the Ames-room giant-and-dwarf illusion into a true top-down trapezoid floor plan and a live perspective projection through the fixed peephole, so you can see exactly why the distorted room reads as an ordinary rectangle from one point and falls apart from any other.
