3D Neuron & Synapse Simulator
Interactive 3D neuron simulator: watch a depolarization wave travel down an axon and trigger neurotransmitter release at a chemical synapse, with stimulus rate, myelination and release probability tunable in real time.
A neuron's signal is really two different physical processes chained together: an electrical action potential races down the axon, then a chemical handoff at the synapse passes the signal to the next cell. This 3D scene renders both stages in space rather than as an abstract graph — a depolarization wave visibly travels along a tubular axon from soma to terminal, and on arrival triggers individual neurotransmitter vesicles to release, drift across the synaptic cleft, and bind receptors on a postsynaptic membrane. Adjust firing rate, release probability, vesicle count and myelination to see how each changes conduction speed and how reliably a spike actually produces a postsynaptic response.
Visualize the propagation of depolarization waves along a 3D axon tube, complete with stochastic vesicle release across synapses.
