Sailboat Physics: Apparent Wind, Sail Trim & Hull Drag (2D)
2D sailing-physics lab: the apparent-wind triangle, a flat-plate sail lift/drag polar driven by angle of attack, quadratic hull resistance and wave-added drag, RK4-integrated to a steady-state hull speed you can see converge live.
This 2D companion replaces the orbiting 3D ocean scene with the actual sailing physics underneath it: a true-wind and boat-speed slider drive a real apparent-wind vector triangle, a boom-angle slider sets the sail's angle of attack against a flat-plate lift/drag polar, and the resulting thrust is RK4-integrated against quadratic hull drag and wave-added resistance until the boat settles at a computed equilibrium speed you can watch it approach.
