Scarce Resource Allocation: Medical Ethics Simulator
Interactive 3D simulator: allocate a limited number of ICU beds among incoming patients under four real ethical allocation frameworks (utilitarian, sickest-first, lottery, first-come) and see the outcome shift in real time.
When ICU beds or ventilators run short, hospitals must choose who gets treated first — and every choice encodes an ethical position. This simulator generates a queue of patients, each with a severity score and age, and lets you allocate a limited number of beds under four real triage frameworks debated in crisis-standards-of-care policy: maximizing total expected life-years saved (utilitarian), treating the most critical patients first (sickest-first / rule of rescue), an equal-chance lottery (egalitarian), or simple arrival order (first-come, first-served). Patients render as a 3D field of spheres colored by severity; treated patients rise onto a green pad, waitlisted patients stay on the floor with a gray pad. Live readouts track beds filled, average age of those treated, total expected life-years saved, and the average severity left untreated — so you can see, numerically, the real trade-off each framework makes.
This simulation presents users with complex ethical dilemmas faced by healthcare professionals, forcing them to consider the nuances of patient care and resource allocation within a medical setting. Participants will grapple with challenging scenarios requiring critical thinking and decision-making skills regarding patient autonomy, informed consent, and potential conflicts.
