A scanning electron microscope builds its image line by line, and this 3D view makes that raster process visible: an electron beam sweeps across a bumpy sample surface, brightening steep edges through genuine secondary-electron physics while a separate, purely instrumental effect — charge accumulating on a poorly conductive sample — leaves streaks that track the scan direction instead of the geometry. Orbit the camera to see the difference directly: real topographic brightening rotates with the sample, while a charging streak stays locked to the raster rows. Tune beam energy, sample conductivity and charging-artifact strength to watch the streaks appear, intensify, or vanish.
