📰 Merging Two Queenright Colonies Safely
An interactive 3D newspaper-method hive combine: a sheet of slitted newspaper separates two stacked queenright colonies, and you control how many days pass, how many slits were cut, and how alike the two colonies smell to see whether the merge goes calmly or turns into fighting.
Two stacked hive boxes are separated by a single slitted sheet of newspaper. Scrub through the days after combining, choose how many slits were cut, and set how alike the two colonies smell to see whether the newspaper method produces a calm merge or a dangerous scuffle.
🔬 What It Demonstrates
Newspaper chews through faster with more starting slits, and bees from each box gradually migrate through the growing gaps as scent equalises. Fighting risk peaks partway through the process — once contact begins but before the two colonies fully share a scent — and is far higher when the colonies are less compatible to begin with.
🎮 How to Use
Drag "Days since combining" to watch the paper get chewed away and bees start crossing between boxes, or press "Play timelapse" to animate it automatically. Adjust the slit count and colony compatibility to see how each changes the merge speed and the risk banner underneath.
💡 Did You Know?
Beekeepers deliberately choose ordinary newsprint rather than thicker paper because it needs to be flimsy enough for worker bees to chew through in a day or two — thick card or plastic sheeting can stall the merge long enough for the colonies to become impatient and break through all at once.
