🧤 Beekeeping Gear & Sting Risk (2D): Agitation Model

A side-on 2D companion to the 3D apiary scene: choose a gear level, work the smoker, set your standing distance and open the hive to see the same bee-agitation and sting-risk formulas drive a swarm of guard bees.

The 3D original models a real trade-off UK beekeepers make every time they approach a hive: how much skin the suit or jacket covers, how much calming smoke the smoker has laid down, and how close and disruptive the inspection is. This 2D companion keeps the same formulas in a readable side view — bee agitation rises with an open hive and close proximity and falls with smoker output, and sting risk multiplies that agitation by proximity and by how much of the body your gear actually protects. Turn the smoker up and the swarm visibly calms and yellows; open the hive at close range in plain clothes and it tightens, reddens and pushes the risk readout into the danger zone.

⚙ Under the hood

2D bee-agitation and sting-risk model: agitation = base + open-hive boost + proximity boost − smoker calming (smoothed over time), sting risk = agitation × proximity × (1 − suit protection), driving a swarm of guard bees around a Langstroth-style hive.

Why does smoke lower bee agitation?

Smoke masks the alarm pheromone guard bees release and triggers an instinctive feeding response, so a well-smoked colony calms even when the hive is open.

Why does a full suit lower sting risk more than a veil alone?

Sting risk in this model is agitation × proximity × (1 − suit protection). A full body suit protects roughly 97% of the body versus about 5% for plain clothes, so the same agitated swarm poses far less risk in full gear.
