🐝 Nucleus Colony Population Model (2D)
2D nucleus-colony population model: switch between a mating nuc, a spring-increase nuc and an overwintering nuc, scrub through a full year and watch population, brood coverage, queen status and a year-long population curve respond to frame count and feeding.
This 2D companion drives the exact same seasonal population model as the 3D nuc cutaway through a flat diagram built for reading the numbers rather than orbiting a scene: frames drawn edge-on carry the same brood-arch, pollen-band and brood-patch rendering as the 3D box, worker bees scatter across the frame area in proportion to the live population estimate, and a queen marker sits still while laying or flies a loop outside the box during the mating-nuc orientation and mating-flight window. A year-long population curve — recomputed at every day of the year from the same model for your current role, frame count and feed setting — sits below the box so you can see where today's reading falls in the colony's full-season trajectory, something the 3D cutaway can only show one day at a time.
Seasonal warmth drives everything: warmth(day) = 0.5 − 0.5·cos(2π·(day−15)/365). Mating nucs cycle a virgin queen through orienting → mating flights → laying every 21 days on a stable small population; spring-increase nucs grow population toward frames/6 capacity scaled by warmth and feed boost until ready to split; overwintering nucs contract with chill (1−warmth) and compute an estimated survival percentage from frame count, capacity and feed. Brood-patch size on every frame scales with laying × population fraction.
