Lake Thermal Stratification & Hydrochemistry Lab (2D)
2D lake water-column lab: a two-layer epilimnion/hypolimnion oxygen-exchange model driven by temperature, nutrient load, wind mixing and water hardness, with a live depth profile and time chart of dissolved oxygen, pH and algae.
This 2D companion goes past the 3D version's single well-mixed water box to model a real limnological phenomenon: a lake splits into a warm, wind-mixed epilimnion at the surface and a colder, isolated hypolimnion below the thermocline, and that split — set live here by a wind-mixing slider alongside temperature — decides whether the oxygen debt from decomposing algae reaches the surface or crashes to zero at the bottom. A depth-profile cross-section colors each layer by its own dissolved-oxygen level and traces the thermocline boundary, while a new water-hardness slider (fixed in the 3D version) now visibly changes how hard the carbonate buffer resists pH swings from the same nutrient load.
