Karst Dissolution: 2D Limestone Erosion & Cave-Network Growth
2D karst dissolution lab: a cellular-automaton cross-section of limestone bedrock dissolved by acidic rainwater. Tune rainwater pH, fracture density and bedding heterogeneity and watch a cave network, sinkholes and stalactites emerge from the same reaction kinetics that carve real karst landscapes.
This 2D companion strips the 3D karst lab down to a readable cross-section: a cellular-automaton grid of limestone is eaten away one cell at a time by an acid-dissolution budget derived straight from rainwater pH, so the pace and pattern of erosion respond to real carbonate reaction kinetics rather than a scripted animation. A fracture-density and bedding-heterogeneity control shape where the cave network branches, a live porosity curve shows the conduit-enlargement feedback that makes karstification accelerate over geologic time, and sinkholes and stalactites are counted as they emerge instead of only shown.
2D karst dissolution lab with a cellular-automaton limestone cross-section, pH-driven reaction kinetics, live porosity and dissolution-rate charts, and sinkhole/stalactite counters.
