Traveling-Wave Ultrasonic Motor — Unrolled Wave View

2D unrolled-stator view of a piezoelectric traveling-wave ultrasonic motor: a flexural wave profile plotted around the unwound circumference, a phase-space ellipse traced by a surface point, and a top-view rotor disc spinning at the true computed rpm.

This is a 2D-native companion to the 3D ring model of a piezoelectric traveling-wave ultrasonic motor. Instead of a tilted stator ring rendered in perspective, the flexural wave is unwound into a straight strip (angle θ on the x-axis, deflection w on the y-axis) exactly like a wave on a string, alongside a phase-space portrait that plots the tangential displacement u₀ against the vertical displacement w₀ of one surface point — the ellipse this traces is the real mechanism by which an oscillating stator rectifies into continuous rotor spin via friction contact. A third panel shows the rotor disc from directly above, turning at the exact signed rpm the same physics produces. Adjust drive frequency, amplitude, the inter-phase angle φ, and the friction/preload coupling to see the wave profile, the ellipse's shape, and the rotor's speed respond together.

⚙ Under the hood

The same two-phase piezoelectric traveling-wave physics unrolled into 2D: a wave-on-a-string strip plot of the stator deflection, an analytic phase-space ellipse traced by a surface point's tangential vs vertical motion, and a top-view rotor disc spinning at the true computed rpm.
