Cyclone Separator Grade-Efficiency Lab (2D)

A 2D cross-section cyclone: tune inlet velocity, median particle size and body geometry, watch a mixed particle batch sort itself between the outer (down, captured) and inner (up, escaped) vortex, and read the Lapple grade-efficiency curve shift live.

This 2D companion runs the same Lapple (1951) cyclone model as the 3D lab through a flat cross-section view built for reading the physics rather than orbiting a chamber: a side panel exposes inlet velocity, median particle size, cyclone geometry and animation speed, a live grade-efficiency curve plots η(d) against particle diameter with the cut diameter marked by a dashed line, and a lognormal batch of particles — spread realistically around your chosen median size — visibly splits between the outer vortex spiraling down to the wall (captured) and the inner vortex reversing up through the vortex finder (escaped), making the S-shaped grade-efficiency curve that governs real industrial cyclones directly visible instead of implied by a single efficiency number.

⚙ Under the hood

2D cyclone separator lab with the Lapple cut-diameter and grade-efficiency model, a live grade-efficiency curve, a lognormal-distributed feed batch, and an estimated inlet pressure drop, all updating as inlet velocity, particle size and geometry change.
