Superconducting Magnet Quench Protection
Interactive quench-protection simulator: trigger a normal-zone in a superconducting coil and watch the detection threshold, dump resistor and hotspot temperature race against normal-zone propagation to protect the magnet.
When a superconducting coil quenches, a tiny resistive spot must be caught and disarmed before it turns into a destructive hotspot. This simulator models one coil section end-to-end: trigger a local quench and watch the normal zone spread at its physical propagation velocity, the resistive voltage climb as the detection system measures it, the dump resistor fire once that voltage crosses your threshold, and the stored magnetic energy race out of the coil while the hotspot temperature is tracked from the same adiabatic heating equation real magnet designers use. Turn protection off to see why every superconducting magnet — from MRI scanners to the LHC's dipoles — carries this exact safety system.
