KERS Efficiency Chain — Energy Losses Through the Conversion Stages
Interactive 2D companion to the 3D KERS race-lap simulator: instead of an idealized lossless store, this model tracks every conversion stage — generator, battery charge, battery discharge, motor — each with its own real efficiency, so the recovered fraction of braking energy and the heat wasted at each stage are computed and shown directly, alongside a scrolling speed-vs-distance strip chart of the lap.
This 2D companion to the 3D KERS race-lap simulator strips out the idealized lossless energy store and replaces it with the real conversion chain a physical kinetic-energy-recovery system actually has: braking energy passes through a generator, a battery-charge step, a battery-discharge step and a motor before it reaches the wheels again as thrust — and every one of those four stages wastes a real fraction of the energy as heat. Cornering speed and braking deceleration are still set purely by tyre grip, exactly as in the 3D model, so KERS never changes how hard the car can brake; it only changes how much of that unavoidable braking energy survives the round trip. Tune the motor/generator efficiency and battery round-trip efficiency alongside the same harvest/deploy power limits and store capacity from the 3D sim, and watch the scrolling speed-distance strip chart and the live energy-flow diagram show exactly where the losses happen and how large they are.
