🎓 Oxford: Inside the Oldest University City in the English-Speaking World
A 3D interactive timeline and campus map of Oxford's college foundations, layered chronologically so you can filter colleges by century and watch the university city grow.
A 3D map of Oxford's colleges rises out of the streets as you scrub through eight centuries, each tower keyed to its real founding year and colour-coded by era — medieval, Tudor & Stuart, Georgian & Victorian, or modern.
🔬 What It Demonstrates
Oxford is not one campus but a federation of independently founded, self-governing colleges built over roughly 850 years. Layering them chronologically shows how the compact medieval core near the river gradually gave way to a much larger Victorian and 20th-century city.
🎮 How to Use
Drag the timeline slider or press Autoplay to watch colleges appear in founding order. Filter by era with the Highlight menu, toggle the surrounding street fabric, and click any tower to jump the timeline to its founding year.
💡 Did You Know?
University College, Balliol and Merton all claim origins in the 1240s–60s, making Oxford's oldest colleges roughly contemporary with the Magna Carta — while the university's own teaching predates all of them by over a century.
