Hive Design Lab: Langstroth vs Warré vs Top Bar vs Flow Hive (2D)

Schematic 2D comparison of four beehive designs: adjust comb fill and ambient temperature, toggle a cutaway view of the frames, and run each hive's own honey-extraction mechanic with a live extracted-volume readout.

This 2D companion trades the orbiting 3D scene for a flat schematic view built for reading the mechanics quickly: pick a hive design and the stage redraws its own box or trough layout, a comb-fill slider raises or lowers the amber level in every cell using the same fill-fraction math for all four designs, and hitting Harvest runs that design's actual extraction behaviour — a frame pulled and lifted for Langstroth and Warré, a comb square cut and dropped into a bucket for Top Bar, or a tap draining into a jar for Flow Hive — with a live extracted-volume counter driven by each design's own extraction rate rather than a shared animation.

⚙ Under the hood

Comb volume is modelled per design from box count, frames per box and cells per frame at a fixed per-cell capacity, scaled by the fill slider; harvesting drains a fraction of that volume over each design's own duration and extraction-rate constant, so the Flow Hive's tap genuinely empties faster than pulling and cutting comb by hand.
