Wildlife Road-Crossing Structures: Green Bridge vs Underpass (2D)
Interactive 2D top-down road-ecology simulator: animals commute between two forest patches split by a highway. Choose a green bridge, an underpass, or no structure at all, tune its width and vegetation cover, and watch crossing success and roadkill mortality respond in real time.
Two forest patches sit on either side of a busy highway, seen here from directly above, and a live population of animals keeps trying to move between them. This simulator models the road-ecology decision every crossing animal effectively makes: detour to a purpose-built crossing structure, or risk a direct dash across traffic. Switch between no structure, an underpass, and a green bridge, tune the structure's width and vegetation cover, and dial traffic volume up or down — the structure-use probability and the Poisson gap-acceptance survival odds for at-grade dashes update live, and the roadkill and successful-crossing counters track the real consequences of each design choice, the same trade-off wildlife-crossing engineers weigh when sizing a real overpass or culvert.
