Biodiversity offsetting looks simple on paper — destroy one unit of habitat, create more than one unit elsewhere — but the accounting hides a timing problem: destruction is instant while restoration matures over years. This 2D simulator draws a development site whose habitat-unit squares vanish the moment clearance begins alongside an offset site whose squares grow in one by one along a real maturation curve, discounted by a habitat-specific risk-of-failure and difficulty-of-creation multiplier. Choose a habitat type, an offset ratio and an implementation delay, then scrub the year slider or drag directly on the net-balance chart to watch the curve cross (or fail to cross) back above zero, while a running "biodiversity debt" readout totals up the unit-years of real, temporary loss the landscape carries along the way.
