Interactive 2D sine-ramp colormap test pattern: watch how a perceptually non-uniform colormap (Jet) invents false ripples and bands where none exist in the data, measured live via CIE L*a*b* lightness and colorblindness (CVD) simulation.
The same dataset can look wildly different depending on which colormap draws it. This simulator renders the classic 2D sine-ramp test pattern — every row is the identical smooth data ramp, only the ripple amplitude changes from top to bottom — and colors it with Viridis, Jet or a plain grayscale ramp. Every color is converted to CIE L*a*b* to measure how perceptually uniform that ramp actually is, and plotted directly as an L* profile curve so you can see exactly where the colormap runs backwards and invents a false feature. A vision-simulation mode reapplies a colorblindness transform matrix to the whole pattern so you can see, and measure, how much of the encoded signal a deuteranope or protanope loses when the colormap depends on red/green contrast instead of lightness.
