Most IoT compromises, including the 2016 Mirai botnet that knocked major sites offline, never needed a software exploit — they walked in through factory-default usernames and passwords that owners never changed. This simulator models 64 IoT devices across four network segments as a susceptible–infected epidemic: a scanning attacker repeatedly tries a random device's default credentials, and any device still running them joins the botnet. Toggle network segmentation to see VLAN isolation choke off lateral spread, toggle auto firmware/credential updates to see patched and rebooted devices drop out of the infected pool, and watch the live compromise count, infection rate and elapsed time track the fight between attacker and defenses in real time.
