BitTorrent Swarm 2D: Piece Verification & IP Exposure
Interactive 2D BitTorrent swarm defense lab: watch SHA-1 piece-hash verification catch corrupted data from malicious peers, see how peer IPs are exposed to the whole swarm, and tune the threat model live. Drag to pan, scroll to zoom.
BitTorrent has no central server to trust, so it defends file integrity with per-piece SHA-1 hashing: every peer is assumed hostile until the bytes it sends hash-check against the value published in the torrent's own metadata. This 2D simulator renders a live swarm — a ring of peer nodes around a piece mosaic — where pieces stream in, get verified in real time, and a peer that keeps sending corrupted data gets locally blacklisted, exactly like a real BitTorrent client. A separate "IP exposure" overlay demonstrates the protocol's real privacy weak point: the same peer-list exchange that lets verification work at all also means every participant's address is visible to the whole swarm, which is the actual source of torrenting's legal and privacy risk rather than any flaw in the hash-checking itself.
