CAN Bus Intrusion Detection 2D: Autonomous Vehicle Security
Interactive 2D simulator of an automotive CAN bus: watch a compromised infotainment ECU spoof brake commands on a schematic ring topology, drag to rotate the bus, and see whether zone-gateway domain isolation and a timing-based intrusion detector catch the forged frames on a live event timeline.
Autonomous and connected cars route safety-critical commands over a shared CAN bus that was never designed with sender authentication — any electrically connected ECU can transmit any message ID. This simulator renders the vehicle's zone architecture as a schematic 2D ring: an Engine ECU, Brakes and Steering ECUs, and an Infotainment/telematics ECU (the realistic entry point for a malicious OTA update or spoofed V2X message) all feeding a central gateway. Start the attack and the Infotainment node begins spoofing the Brakes ECU's arbitration ID; watch whether the gateway's domain-isolation whitelist and its timing-based intrusion detector catch the forgery, or whether a well-tuned injection rate slips through. Drag the ring to rotate the topology, read the scrolling event timeline below it, and watch the live counters track legitimate deliveries, blocked intrusions, false positives from an overly strict IDS, and any malicious frames that evaded both defenses.
