Crystal Defects: Dislocation Glide (2D)

Interactive 2D edge-dislocation simulator: watch an extra half-plane of atoms glide through a crystal lattice under shear stress using the real isotropic-elasticity displacement field, leaving a permanent slip step.

This 2D simulator renders a cross-section of a crystal lattice from the side: an edge dislocation — an extra half-plane of atoms — sits pinned in the bond network until the applied shear stress τ crosses the critical resolved shear stress. Raise the slider past that threshold and the core glides one lattice spacing at a time toward the free edge, bending nearby bonds according to the real isotropic-elasticity displacement field, until it exits and leaves a permanent slip step — the same atomic-scale mechanism that lets ductile metals bend and deform without shattering like glass.

⚙ Under the hood
