CLDR Plural Rules Explorer (2D)

Interactive 2D pannable/zoomable grid visualizer for the Unicode CLDR plural-rules algorithm that every localized mobile app relies on: watch how the same integer is sorted into a different grammatical plural category (zero/one/two/few/many/other) depending on the target language, and why 'n items' cannot simply be a hard-coded string in i18n code.

This 2D companion to the 3D CLDR plural-rules explorer runs the identical Unicode CLDR rule engine — the same per-language boolean grammar and the same six-category colour code — but lays the integers 0–100 out as a flat, draggable, zoomable 11×11 tile grid rather than an instanced 3D cube field. Switch between English, Russian, Polish, Arabic, Welsh, French and Japanese to see how differently each language partitions the same 101 numbers — Russian and Arabic need six-way branching where English needs two, and Japanese needs none at all — while live readouts track the matched rule, the share of numbers in that category, and how many distinct categories the locale actually uses. Pan and zoom the grid itself to inspect any cluster of tiles up close.

⚙ Under the hood

A pannable, zoomable 2D grid running the exact same Unicode CLDR plural-rules engine as the 3D version: each of the integers 0-100 is colored by which grammatical plural category (zero/one/two/few/many/other) it falls into for a chosen language, with bar height showing how common that category is for the locale. Switch between English, Russian, Polish, Arabic, Welsh, French and Japanese to see how differently each language partitions the same numbers.
